2.1 - Human Anatomy

To know how to draw humans, you need to first understand their anatomy. Yes, you're going to have to learn it sooner or later, so let's get it over with now!

Your muscles and skeletons define the shape of your body. If they were deformed in any way, your body shape would be completely off. The same concept applies to the humans you draw, which is why understanding anatomy is so important. Of course, you don't need to remember the names of the skeletons or muscles, just their relative lengths, positions and range of movements.

We're all experts on how bodies move since we do have one of our own after all, but sometimes we forget which movements we're capable of and which ones we're not when we're drawing. Thus it's important to always keep the movement ranges of different limbs in mind.

Notice how the trunk isn't simply a rectangular block. It curves along the rib cage and abdominal muscles, even for males, and the same goes for the arms and the legs. The shapes of the limbs you draw should thus be curved as well, but we'll talk about that in more detail later.
