1.3 - Strokes

Drawing is just like DDR. At first, your legs can¡¯t move as fast and you¡¯re unable to keep up with the arrows. After doing a few songs and failing a few times, you will get the hang of it. Your legs will get used to moving quickly, and you learn to anticipate what to do.

If you've never drawn before, your strokes will most likely need lots of work. Beginners often draw using short strokes because they require less control, but you should avoid them unless you are drawing something furry. Strokes should be long and confident, and the best way to gain confidence is practice. Yes, that's right, practice. (You're going to see this word so much it will make you sick). After a while, your brain will be accustomed to the motions associated with drawing and will know what to expect. Your hand will be less shaky, and you will even be able to draw with your eyes closed.

More homework! Yay!
First, a warm-up. Find a sheet of paper and draw 10 long straight lines in one single stroke (without a ruler of course). Get used to the feeling of just putting your pencil down onto the paper and letting it fly across freely.

Then, find any three anime or manga images off the Internet, and try to copy them as precisely as possible. Notice how the artist drew the eyes, nose, mouth, legs, hands, etc. At first, this exercise may be frustrating because your drawings don't look like the originals at all or you find it hard to control your hand movements, and that is perfectly normal. If fact, if you succeed the first time, you shouldn¡¯t even be reading this part of the tutorial. Don't rush, take your time and put your best efforts into copying these images. The more pictures you copy, the faster you'll improve.
