1.1 - Drawing Guidelines

If you have never drawn before, it's important to learn the basics even if you are only interested in manga art style. Drawing well takes a lot of practice and patience (I'm sure you've heard this so many times that it's become cliche'd, but it's true). Learning how to draw as a beginner can be intimidating at first especially with the overwhelming wealth of information out there, so these tutorials serve as a way to teach you in a step-by-step fashion.

The first step to drawing an object is to separate it into basic geometric shapes (eg. triangle, square, circle, etc). These shapes serve as guidelines that will later help you keep the general shape, size, and placement of the object in mind while you add details.

Next, find the center of your group of shapes and mark it with a large cross. This will make it easier for you to draw symmetrical things. The lines of your cross need to follow the surface of the object, so if the object is curved, so should your cross.

Once you get the general idea of where you want your object to be and how large it is, you can mark the boundaries with more guidelines if needed. For instance, it is very hard to draw a perfectly round circle, but if you add guidelines telling you an estimate of where the lines should curve, the process will be much easier.

Now you can start sketching the outline. Follow the edges of your object with your eyes and coordinate their movement with those of your drawing hand. Where the borders are straight, so should your outline. If they are curved, yours should be as well. Remember to stick to your guidelines as much as possible. They make everything easier.

You're almost ready to add details. First, you need to check for errors. Look at the outline you just drew. Is it a bit slanted? Is one side a bit too big compared to the other? It's important that you correct these small mistakes early on because they will only magnify later when you start adding details.

If you're happy with what you have, you can now add more details

So to recap:
  1. Separate object into shapes
  2. Draw cross to mark center
  3. Draw outline
  4. Check for errors
  5. Add details
